Plastic Surgery Project A project in which we investigated the relation between Jewellery and Plastic Surgery. For this research, we collaborated with the Plastic Surgery department of the VUmc, a nearby hospital. Field research: Three of their surgeons came over to our department and gave us lectures about their field and later, our students attended life plastic surgery sessions in the hospital where they had the change to talk with the patients and the surgeons. We had introductions in both cosmetic plastic surgery and clinical plastic surgery. Workshop: sKINship – A workshop in Pattern Cutting inspired by Plastic Surgery. Juliana Sissons and Rhian Solomon came over from London to give a very inspirational two days workshop during which students learned the basics of pattern cutting in relation to plastic surgery techniques. Exhibition: These intense experiences formed the main inspiration for material experiments, jewellery pieces, jewellery related works, works that investigated the notion of beauty ideals, its relation to fashion and consumers mentality. With a selection of the outcome we created an exhibition in the hospital. Value: Not only has this been a valuable experience for our students, also the plastic surgeons found it more than worth while. Being confronted with the sharp, open, imaginative and critical students and their work, the surgeons were triggered to re-think aspects of their profession and their views on both ethics and aesthetics. Participants: Niki Ulfstedt Sae Honda Marion Blume Annabelle Moison Anna Sobolewska Cecilie Mouritsen Ditte Jensen Julia Olanders Laura Klinkenberg Marie Bartsch Roel van den Hoek Tamara Vierbergen

Title of the project: CROSS-POLLINATION Short description of the project: What role can touch and being touched play in multidisciplinary research fields when written and spoken language is a limitation? How can we use physical, haptic and speculative objects to connect artistic and scientific research? Based on these questions and related to eleven different scientific PHD-research projects from the Wageningen University the students from the Jewellery - linking bodies & DesignLAB collaborated and developed portable conversation pieces that trigger curiosity, invite to wonder, to touch, to communicate through senses, open up a dialogue, facilitate feedback and opens up new perspectives on the PHD-research. Media/material: Food, fabric, soil, metal, bacteria, robe, wood, fungi, fat, LED-light, glass, DDT, larvae. Names participants & department: Jewellery - linking bodies & DesignLAB. Tree Project: The Tree Project. A 1 week project in a forest park in Amsterdam. A collaboration between Jewellery and Architecture students. For us an interesting question to investigate was: can a jeweller’s approach be brought into action outside of the jeweller’s studio? What, as jewellers, can we contribute to a landscape and how does a collaboration with colleagues from a distant field like that of Architecture develop? With the use of hand tools only! The students transformed the tree into a 2D field installation.
